The 2024 Strength of Schedule was done differently this year in order to get a better idea of just how strong a team's schedule actually was. The simple math is this: we multiplied the Adjusted Opponent Size (more on that below) by the Opponent Win % to get a number and then ranked all teams based on that number. The change this year was that instead of just using the class size of all teams as designated by MSHSAA, we broke down the schools into four groups based on how strong of a season each team had. These teams were divided based upon their MPR Points accumulated throughout the year. You can see how the "new classes" were sorted below. Teams that ended up with 3.5 MPR points and above were given a Class 4 designation, 2.8-3.499 were considered Class 3, 2-2.799 Class 2 and 1.999 and under Class 1. In theory, this would have been the four playoff classes based on a competition factor.
For example, playing either Notre Dame de Sion (the Class 2 champs) this year meant that you had a 4 counted toward your Strength of Schedule. Last year, playing them would've given you a 2 because they were designated as a Class 2 school by MSHSAA's classification system. Conversely, teams like Hickman and Rock Bridge, designated C4 by MSHSAA, would actually be counted as a C3 team in our adjusted rankings.
By adjusting the teams this way it should be a better indicator of which teams played a more challenging schedule based on the season their opponents had.
