The 2023 Strength of Schedule was done differently this year in order to get a better idea of just how strong a team's schedule actually was. The simple math is this: we multiplied the Adjusted Opponent Size (more on that below) by the Opponent Win % to get a number and then ranked all teams based on that number. The change this year was that instead of just using the class size of all teams as designated by MSHSAA, we broke down the schools into four groups based on how strong of a season each team had. These teams were divided based upon their MPR Points accumulated throughout the year. You can see how the "new classes" were sorted below. Teams that ended up with 3.5 MPR points and above were given a Class 4 designation, 2.8-3.499 were considered Class 3, 2-2.799 Class 2 and 1.999 and under Class 1. In theory, this would have been the four playoff classes based on a competition factor.

For example, playing either Bishop DuBourg or Duchesne (the Class 1 finalists) this year meant that you had a 4 counted toward your Strength of Schedule. Last year, both of those teams would've given you a 1 because they were designated as a Class 1 school by MSHSAA's classification system. By adjusting the teams this way it should be a better indicator of which teams played a more challenging schedule based on the season their opponents had.

Note: Prior to the playoffs starting (10-27 MPR), the Class sizes using this model would've been: C1 - 53 teams, C2 - 64 teams, C3 - 64 teams and C4 - 42 teams, so there was a slight shift from before and after the playoffs.
