Promotion/Relegation 3-Year Average

Using the MPR Average from the past 3 years and then using the MSHSAA format of 64 teams in the top 3 classes, we were able to do a 4-class classification that would project how teams would be grouped for the 2022 season based entirely on MPR. Public/Private does not get factored in at all - this is simply the top 64, next 64, etc. based on a 3-year success/strength factor. (Note: In 2021, there were 54 schools in Class 2 and 40 in Class 1 with 224 schools total - this page includes schools that have participated since 2019, but may not have played in 2021, which is why there are 234 schools listed.) Much like the Championship Factor currently in use by MSHSAA, the numbers would change each year. Since we only have MPR for the past 3 years, we obviously just used a 3-year period instead of the 6-year window that is currently in place. After the 2022 season concluded, the 2019 season numbers would be dropped, 2022 numbers added and the scores would be recalculated if we continued to use a 3-year factor. (The debate on what is the best number of years to use for a Success Factor will likely continue...3 at the minimum, while 6 is where it is now based on MSHSAA's ad-hoc committee decision.) In addition, we also have put aside the enrollment factors as well. MSHSAA has stated that no school in the top 3 classes will be competing with schools over two times the size of the smallest in the class ("the 2.0 differential"). For this exercise, we went strictly on success over the past 3 years to form a state tournament based mainly on Promotion/Relegation that is the norm for soccer throughout most of the world just to show a "what if" picture of how things could look in MO.

Here is the link to a "just for fun" state playoff in 2022 that would match teams of equal success over those three years. As stated before, grouping schools into feasible geographic districts is challenging - hats off to MSHSAA for doing this in every sport every year - so there may be a few schools within "wrong districts" based on geography and for that, we apologize (For example, Class 4 has 33 teams from the SE/STL area, which is one too many. Timberland is the farthest west and likely better suited to go the "catch-all" district 5 that has several mid-MO teams, as well as some from east of KC, but we put Eureka there for now just for balancing numbers. The most logical thing travel-wise and regional-wise would be to make a 9-team district with Eureka in District 1 and a 7-team District 5. However, to fit into the MSHSAA scenario of 8-team districts, we just went this route instead of breaking up Timberland and the schools that are close by in District 4. These problems can be found throughout most classes, most years. For now, just go with it...)
